img01On this World Environment Day and for Generation Restoration 2021, UNIDROIT highlights its efforts to develop international private law instruments which take environmental objectives into account.

For instance, the Protocol to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment on Matters specific to Mining, Agricultural and Construction Equipment (the MAC Protocol) provides greater access to credit on better terms, and may become part of a sound platform for green investment in modern and eco-friendly equipment. This could allow for the remediation of contaminated sites, land rehabilitation, as well as reduce the carbon footprint of any MAC activity, thus contributing not only to the fight against climate change, but also to ecosystem restoration.

The Legal Guide on Agricultural Land Investment Contracts (the ALIC Guide) explores how private contracts may strengthen environmental obligations that are already required by domestic and international laws, such as the obligation to bear the cost of ecosystem restoration at the time of the investment project closure.
