IPLD BEPCAC – Research Scholarships (Visiting Researchers)

Background and Objectives

Within the framework of the International Programme for Law and Development (IPLD), UNIDROIT is launching a call for applications for Research Scholarships (Visiting Researchers) under the BEPCAC component. The scholarship is intended to contribute to the development of legal capacity and knowledge in line with UNIDROIT’s mandate.

The initiative aims to support the implementation and dissemination of UNIDROIT instruments through applied legal research and project-oriented activities.

Priority may be given to proposals aligned with the objectives of the IPLD Programme and UNIDROIT’s broader work.

Applications from candidates with prior involvement in IPLD BEPCAC activities or familiarity with UNIDROIT instruments are particularly encouraged.

Target Countries: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.

Scope of Activities

Selected researchers will:

– conduct applied legal research;

– develop structured outputs (e.g. research papers, technical notes);

– provide technical expertise to IPLD activities;

– contribute to participants’ projects where appropriate;

– engage with the work of the Secretariat and contribute to the intellectual life of the Programme.

Duration

The duration will normally range between one and five months, with flexibility depending on the proposed research activity.

Duration and modality may be adapted, where appropriate, in agreement with the Secretariat.

Scholarships will normally be aligned with the timing of IPLD programme activities.

Funding

Selected candidates may receive a monthly stipend (normally up to EUR 1,500).

The overall duration and level of support will be determined in relation to the scope of the proposed activities and available resources.

Eligibility

Applicants should:

– have advanced expertise in relevant legal areas;

– demonstrate experience in research or advisory activities;

– have strong analytical and drafting skills;

– have an excellent command of English.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit:

– a Curriculum Vitae;

– a Cover Letter;

– a Research Proposal outlining topic, methodology, expected outputs, and relevance, including regional impact.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be assessed on the basis of:

– quality and relevance of the proposed research;

– alignment with UNIDROIT priorities;

– potential impact at regional level;

– ability to contribute to IPLD activities.

Outputs and Dissemination

Selected researchers may be invited to present their work at the end of the scholarship and contribute to knowledge-sharing activities. 

A copy of the research output shall be submitted to UNIDROIT. UNIDROIT may use and disseminate the work for its institutional purposes, with appropriate acknowledgement of the author.

The scholarship is granted as support for gaining professional or research experience and does not establish any form of employment or professional relationship with UNIDROIT.

The scholarship amount is gross and may be subject to taxation in accordance with applicable fiscal regulations.

Selected candidates are responsible for ensuring adequate insurance coverage (including accident and third-party liability) during their participation, unless otherwise specified by UNIDROIT.

Selection will be conducted by an internal committee. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

UNIDROIT reserves the right not to award any scholarship.
