FAQ

1           What is the LPLD program and who is it aimed at?

The IPLD is one of UNIDROIT’s most important programs for strengthening legal capacity. It is designed to provide public officials, legislators, and legal professionals with the tools they need to implement and use UNIDROIT’s international standards, promoting economic development and legal certainty in their countries.

2          Who can apply for IPLD 2026 “Africa Plus”?

The program is open to judges, public lawyers, legal officers, and senior legislative drafters from African countries who are directly involved in legislative drafting, judicial practice, or institutional legal reform. Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in promoting law, development, and international cooperation

3          Is the program open to private legal practitioners or academics?

The program primarily targets public sector legal professionals and those engaged in institutional or legislative reform. However, applications from professionals whose work directly contributes to public legal development or policy implementation may be considered.

4          Is there an age limit to apply?

There is no specific age limit. Selection is based on professional experience, institutional relevance, and demonstrated commitment to legal development.

Applicants from developing countries or emerging economies are given priority.

 

APPLICATION

1          How to apply?

The following documentation must be submitted by the deadline date of the call:

  • Official application form (available on the website)
  • Updated CV
  • An Endorsement Letter from the institution to which you belong, demonstrating the impact that the program will have on the administration of your country of origin. The Endorsement Letter must be submitted in its original format, accompanied by a certified translation.

Applications can only be submitted online, not by email.

Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

2          How is the course structured?

The course lasts one month and combines different teaching methods:

  • Theoretical modules: delivered both in person and online. These are lessons on the main UNIDROIT instruments, namely commercial contracts, factoring, leasing, and movable property guarantees.
  • In-person attendance is mandatory
  • Case studies: practical analysis of how these laws are applied in national contexts
  • Networking: discussion sessions between delegates from different countries to exchange best practices

3       Is a certificate issued at the end of the program?

Yes. At the end of the program, participants who have successfully completed all modules receive the Official UNIDROIT Certificate, which is internationally recognized as proof of specialization in development law.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM

  1. In which language is the program delivered?

Since the program is delivered entirely in English, participants must have a mandatory sufficient proficiency to actively engage in lectures, discussions, and written assignments. No translation or interpretation is provided.

2          Can I apply if I do not yet have institutional endorsement?

Institutional endorsement is mandatory. Applicants are encouraged to secure approval from their institution before submitting the application.

3          How are participants selected?

Candidates are evaluated based on their professional background, relevance of the program to their institutional role, quality of the cover letter, English proficiency, and commitment to promoting legal development. Geographic and gender diversity are also taken into consideration.

4          Does the IPLD program provide scholarships or other financial support?

IPLD provides limited financial support during the in-person phase. This includes accommodation, a contribution towards living expenses, and partial travel cost coverage, granted on a case-by-case basis. To qualify for this support, accepted candidates are expected to attend at least 80% of both the online and in-person components of the program.

5          Can participants seek and use external funding?

Yes. Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek funding from employers, government institutions, or other sponsoring organizations.

6          Can participants join only the online component?

No. The program is designed as a single integrated course combining online and residential learning.

7          Are accompanying companions (Ex. family members) allowed during the residential phase?

Participants may choose to travel with accompanying companions; however, the IPLD program does not provide support for visa applications, travel arrangements, accommodation, or living expenses for accompanying companions. Accommodation provided by the program is arranged in single rooms and is reserved exclusively for participants.

8          What is the expected time commitment during the program?

The program is full-time during both the online and residential phases. Participants are expected to actively engage in lectures, workshops, group discussions, and assignments.
