The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT)
is an independent intergovernmental organisation based in Rome.
Its team of professionals and technical support staff works to modernise, harmonise and co-ordinate private and in particular commercial law as between States and groups of States by preparing treaties, model laws, principles and other types of uniform rules.
We are currently inviting applications for the position of
SENIOR LEGAL OFFICER
The ideal candidate is a dynamic lawyer/jurist who, in addition to (i) an outstanding academic record (including LLM/equivalent or higher), has (ii) an interest in, and a solid knowledge of, comparative private law, commercial and private international law, and (iii) experience of 8 years or more as lawyer/jurist/legal officer at a law firm, international organisation, research institution, university or national government, preferably in a common law jurisdiction.
A national of a member State of UNIDROIT, he/she must have proven talent for research and legal analysis, very good communication and drafting skills, capacity to supervise the work of more junior staff, and organise his/her work and carry out projects with a minimum of supervision. Ability to work in multicultural environments is necessary. Under the supervision of the Secretary-General and other senior staff, the main duties could include: (i) being responsible for projects that may result in the drafting of a legal guide, a model law or an international legal instrument; (ii) conducting legal research on selected topics of private law, commercial and private international law; (iii) preparing reports and initial drafts of international instruments and related documents; (iv) liaising with interested academic, professional and industry circles; (v) organising meeting and consultations on relevant topics; (vi) attending conferences and other outside meetings; (vii) delivering speeches and making presentations on relevant topics; and (viii) performing other tasks as may be assigned by the Secretary-General. Knowledge/experience in financial management (budget supervision, understanding of financial accounts) will be valued positively.
Duration of the appointment: Initially 3 years, renewable up to 5-year periods.
Place of work: The successful candidate will be expected to work from UNIDROIT´s Seat in Rome. Traveling on mission will also be part of the job assignment.
Salary: Competitive salary according to the scales of the United Nations, level P IV, step 1, or similar. The expected contribution of the successful candidate based on personal qualifications will be evaluated for pay setting purposes
Language requirements: English (mother tongue level); other languages (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish) are an asset.
