The International Programme for Law and Development (IPLD) 2026 marks the 6th edition of this flagship initiative, organized by the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) with the financial support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI-DGCS). 

The IPLD 2026 BEPCAC Programme seeks to provide participants with a thorough, practice-oriented understanding of UNIDROIT’s legal instruments for harmonising and modernising private and commercial law, with a focus on their application in real legal and institutional contexts. 

Building on the success of previous editions, IPLD 2026 expands its reach to the Balkans, Eastern Partnership countries, Central Asia, and the Caucasus*, offering legal professionals from these regions a unique opportunity to enhance their expertise, engage in international legal cooperation, and contribute to the development of robust legal frameworks.

About UNIDROIT

The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) is an independent intergovernmental organisation based in Rome. Its mission is to examine the needs and methods for modernising, harmonising, and coordinating private and commercial law among States, and to develop standard legal instruments, principles, and rules to achieve these aims. UNIDROIT instruments are widely utilised by legislators, courts, and legal practitioners worldwide.

Programme Overview

The 2nd edition of IPLD BEPCAC will equip legal professionals from target countries with the knowledge and tools to drive impactful legal reforms and sustainable development. The programme bridges the gap between international legal principles and regional implementation, offering a dynamic learning environment that combines theoretical insights with hands-on applications. The programme is highly competitive and selective.

Methodology and Structure

The programme features expert-led lectures, interactive workshops, case studies, and practical simulations, delivered by high-level judges, academics, legal practitioners, UNIDROIT representatives, and experts from intergovernmental organizations. Participants will also develop a project under expert guidance, applying UNIDROIT legal instruments to their national or regional context.

The programme consists of:

    • One week of online training: 31 August – 4 September 2026
  • Two weeks of in-person workshops in Rome: 7 – 18 September 2026

The Role of Transnational Law in Shaping Global Legal Frameworks
Examines how transnational legal principles and UNIDROIT instruments contribute to the harmonisation of private law and support legal certainty, cross-border cooperation and development

  • International commercial and investment contracts

Mastering International Commercial and Investment Contracts
Explores the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts and related instruments, with practical insights into the drafting, interpretation and enforcement of cross-border commercial and investment agreements.

  • Private law, agriculture and sustainable development

Leveraging Private Law for Sustainable Agricultural Development
Analyses how private law tools and UNIDROIT legal guidance can support sustainable agriculture, food security and responsible investment.

  • Law, technology and emerging challenges

Adapting Legal Systems to Technological Advancements
Addresses legal challenges arising from technological change, including digital assets and new forms of economic activity, through the lens of private and commercial law.

  • Civil procedure, enforcement and dispute resolution

Strengthening Justice Systems through Civil Procedure and Enforcement
Provides an overview of key principles of civil procedure, enforcement and dispute resolution, highlighting their role in ensuring effectiveness, fairness and legal certainty.

  • Cultural property and legal protection

Safeguarding Cultural Heritage through Legal Innovation
Examines UNIDROIT’s legal instruments for the protection and restitution of cultural property and their application in judicial and administrative practice.

  • Private law and the Sustainable Development Goals

Integrating Private Law Tools for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Explores how private and commercial law instruments contribute to achieving the SDGs, through case studies and practical applications.

Participants will develop an applied project under expert guidance, focusing on the implementation of UNIDROIT instruments in their national or regional context.

Eligibility and Application

Target Participants: The programme is designed for professionals directly involved in legislative drafting, judicial decision-making, legal reform processes, or the implementation of private and commercial law frameworks.

Eligible applicants must be nationals of the target countries listed above.

Language: The programme will be conducted entirely in English. Applicants are expected to have a strong command of spoken and written English; no translation services will be provided.

Application Deadline: 20th May 2026. 

Notification of Acceptance: 25th June 2026

Maximum intake: 20 participants

Special consideration is given to qualified female applicants to promote gender equity.

APPLICATION PROCESS

    • Applicants must complete and submit the ONLINE APPLICATION FORM
    • Include the following documents in English:
      • Cover Letter: outline at least three syllabus topics relevant to your work and explain how participating in IPLD will enhance your professional impact.
      • Curriculum Vitae (CV): highlight your educational qualifications, professional experience, and key achievements.
      • Passport Scan: provide a scanned copy of your passport, ensuring its validity for travel in 2026.
  • Endorsement/Authorization Letter from the applicant’s Institution.
    A template endorsement/ authorization letter is available for guidance. Applicants may use their institution’s official format, provided that all required information is included.

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Programme Benefits

Certification: Full-time attendance (both online and in-person) and active participation are required to obtain a certificate. UNIDROIT reserves the right not to issue a certificate in cases of partial attendance or insufficient participation.

IPLD Alumni Network: Participants will join a global network of IPLD alumni, with access to UNIDROIT resources, research collaboration opportunities, professional exchanges, and invitations to high-level events and webinars.

Fees and Financial Support

No participation fees. 

Participants are encouraged to seek funding from employers, government bodies, or external agencies to support their travel and accommodation expenses.

UNIDROIT may provide limited financial support, subject to the availability of funds and internal assessment, including:

  • Accommodation in Rome at a standard suitable for students or early-career professionals.
  • Partial contributions toward travel and living expenses (assessed on a case-by-case basis).

VISAS

Selected participants are responsible for obtaining any required visa. UNIDROIT will provide supporting documentation upon request but cannot guarantee visa issuance.

Selection Process

Final selection of participants will be made by UNIDROIT, taking into account professional background, geographical balance, gender considerations, and overall programme objectives.
