On 26 September 2025 UNIDROIT joined the Fourth Forum on the Rule of Law in Digital Trade held in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China. The Forum, a flagship parallel event to the Fourth Global Digital Trade Expo, was co-organised by the Free Trade Development Board of Zhejiang Province, the Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce, the Zhejiang Law Society Digital Law Research Institute, and Zhejiang Gongshang University School of Law. The event represents a principal convening platform for academic exchange and policy discussions on digital trade legal frameworks. It has gained significant attention and favourable reception alongside continued endorsement from the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China. This year, the Forum focused on two pivotal themes at the core of current digital trade development and of great concern to the international community: Cross-Border E-commerce Platform Rule Regulation and Innovative Development and Institutional Innovation in AI industry.
Legal Officer Giulia Previti delivered a keynote speech addressing UNIDROIT’s role in harmonising transnational commercial law and its pioneering work concerning digital assets. Ms Previti provided an overview of UNIDROIT’s legislative work, including China’s role as an UNIDROIT Member State. She then introduced the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law (the DAPL Principles), an innovative soft law instrument launched in 2023 addressing digital assets where they are the object of dispositions and acquisitions, and where interests in those assets are to be asserted against third parties. Ms Previti offered an overview of the DAPL Principles’ proprietary law framework and touched upon key provisions concerning control, innocent acquisition, security rights, custody, linked assets, and conflicts of laws. She also stressed China’s contributions to the development and promotion of the DAPL Principles.
