UNIDROIT PARTICIPATES IN A CONFERENCE ON THE FIGHT AGAINST ILLICIT TRAFFICKING OF CULTURAL PROPERTY IN THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA

UNIDROIT was honoured to take part in the workshop on the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural property, held in Chisinau from 18 to 20 November 2025 organised by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe (Venice) and funded by the European Union. The event brought together government representatives, cultural heritage professionals, law-enforcement agencies, and international partners to strengthen cooperation and exchange best practices in combating the unlawful trade in cultural objects.

The workshop provided an important opportunity for Ms Marina Schneider, Principal Legal Officer and Treaties Depositary, to present the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects, highlighting its key provisions, practical benefits, and its essential role in reinforcing national and international mechanisms for the protection of cultural heritage.

This was also an opportunity for UNIDROIT to meet the new Minister of Culture of the Republic of Moldova, Cristian Jardan, and other national authorities to explore the advantages of accession to the 1995 Convention, including improved legal clarity, strengthened restitution procedures, and closer alignment with international standards. Constructive exchanges underscored the value of the Convention as a tool to support the Development of the National Strategy for Culture and Cultural Heritage 2035 in the Republic of Moldova.

UNIDROIT looks forward to continuing this dialogue and remains committed to supporting the Republic of Moldova and all States in their efforts to safeguard cultural heritage from illicit trafficking.
