UNIDROIT renews engagement with Australian stakeholders to conclude Pacific region mission

Between 16 – 20 March 2026, a high level delegation from the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) travelled to Australia with the objective of renewing bilateral ties and strengthening engagement. During the mission, Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado, Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano and Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson visited Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney to engage with a range of stakeholders from government, private industry, the legal sector and academia.

In Melbourne, the UNIDROIT delegation visited the University of Melbourne to meet with interested faculty and delivered a seminar on “International Legal Harmonisation and Sustainable Development: The role of UNIDROIT”. The seminar introduced participants to UNIDROIT’s history and mandate with a focus on projects aimed at sustainable development, with a focus on the ongoing work on verified carbon credits. The seminar also discussed how economic development and sustainability considerations affect all of UNIDROIT’s work, including perspectives from legal experts that have represented Australia and Japan during international negotiations at UNIDROIT. The seminar featured presentations from all three members of the UNIDROIT delegation as well as Professor Megumi Hara (Chuo University, Japan) and Bruce Whittaker (University of Melbourne, Australia).

In Canberra, the UNIDROIT delegation met with senior government officials from the Attorney-General’s Department, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Department of Treasury and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to discuss a variety of initiatives, including Australia’s role as a prominent UNIDROIT Member State, implementation of UNIDROIT instruments, Australian participation in new projects and promotion of UNIDROIT’s work in the Asia Pacific region. While in Canberra, UNIDROIT also met with the Australian Law Council, the LAWASIA Secretariat and the South Pacific Lawyers Association Secretariat to discuss strengthening bilateral and regional engagement.

In Sydney, the UNIDROIT delegation delivered a guest seminar to the Australian chapter of the Banking & Financial Services Law Association (BFSLA) on UNIDROIT’s role in developing international legal instruments that harmonise secured transactions law in order to facilitate cross-border access to credit. The seminar surveyed existing access to credit instruments related to asset-based finance and leasing, with a focus on the Cape Town Convention and the UNIDROIT Model Law on Factoring. The seminar was attended by representatives of firms, the major banks, and academic experts. On 19 March, the UNIDROIT delegation delivered a seminar at the University of Sydney in partnership with the Law Students Association on “UNIDROIT: Pathways to Scholarships, Internships & Global Legal Work” and met with interested faculty from the Centre for Asian and Pacific Law to strengthen cooperation. While in Sydney, UNIDROIT also participated in a judicial roundtable with over 12 judges of the Australian Federal Court and New South Wales Supreme Court, met with senior officials from the Asian Development Bank Pacific Liaison and Coordination Office and participated in meetings with partners from the major law firms.

Australia has been a UNIDROIT Member State since 1973 and has ratified three UNIDROIT treaties in the last 15 years.
