UNIDROIT strengthens Pacific region engagement through participation in the Christchurch Conference on International and Transnational Legal Frameworks

Between 12 – 13 March 2026, a high level delegation from the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) participated in the inaugural Christchurch Conference on International and Transnational Legal Frameworks 2026 (CCITLF 2026). With a theme of “Dispute Resolution and Private Law in an Interconnected World”, the conference provided an opportunity for the Institute to highlight a range of UNIDROIT instruments and how they could enhance cross-border legal harmonisation and deliver economic growth in the Pacific region. The conference was primarily organised by Professor Petra Butler (Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Canterbury and UNIDROIT Correspondent) in partnership with the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand.

Over two days and through three streams of simultaneous panels, the conference featured presentations from over 50 speakers, including the New Zealand Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Vanushi Walters, Samoan Supreme Court Judge the Honourable Vui Clarence Nelson and Singapore International Commercial Court Judge David Goddard KC. CCITLF 2026 was well attended by a range of legal experts from the Pacific region, including participants from Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Samoa and Timor Leste. Of particular importance for UNIDROIT was participation from senior government officials, members of the judiciary as well as prominent academics and practitioners.

UNIDROIT instruments featured prominently throughout the conference. During CCITLF 2026, Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado delivered an opening address, spoke during the plenary panel on “The Role of Private Law in Uncertain Times” and participated in two further panels on (i) Emerging Issues in International Business Law and (ii) Cross-Border Disputes Over Cryptocurrency Non-Fungible Tokens and Digital Assets. Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano spoke on a panel on “Balancing Commercial and State Interests in Investor-State Disputes” and moderated a separate panel on “Enforcement of Foreign Court Judgments and Arbitral Awards”. Finally, Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson spoke on two panels on (i) Private Legal Issues and Disputes in Agricultural / Fisheries Trade and (ii) Harmonising International and Domestic Law on Access to Credit and Security Interests. The speaking opportunities afforded to UNIDROIT staff provided a platform for the Institute to raise awareness regarding a range of UNIDROIT instruments with a particular relevance to the Pacific region, including the UNIDROIT Principles on International Commercial Contracts and Investment Contracts project, the Cape Town Convention and its Protocols, the Model Laws on Factoring and Warehouse Receipts, the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law and the soon to be adopted Best Practices on Effective Enforcement.
