The ceremony was chaired by Professor Ignacio Tirado, Secretary-General of UNIDROIT, who, in his remarks, thanked the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for its continued support to the Programme:

“IPLD Africa Plus fully reflects the spirit of UNIDROIT: promoting dialogue among legal systems, strengthening international cooperation and contributing to development through harmonised legal instruments. We are particularly grateful to the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for its continued support to this Programme, which takes on an even more special significance in the year of UNIDROIT’s Centenary.”

Maria Teresa Iaquinta, Director of the Programme, underlined the importance of the in-person dimension of the training experience as a privileged opportunity for dialogue with African professionals and institutions and for exchange among legal systems:

“IPLD Africa Plus confirms the value of training as a space for dialogue among institutions, professionals and different legal systems. The presence of the participants in Rome, the daily exchanges and the projects developed during the Programme have shown in concrete terms how UNIDROIT instruments can support pathways of cooperation, development and institutional strengthening.”

Confirming the value of the experience, Lami Wendy Adams, Associate Vice President – Legal, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, and a participant in the 2026 edition, stated:

“The Programme was an unforgettable blend of intellectual growth, cultural discovery and international exchange. It offered a unique perspective on UNIDROIT’s instruments and ongoing projects, made even more special by the Centenary celebrations. The diversity of the participants and the workshop sessions fostered fruitful exchanges, shared learning and new perspectives on harmonisation. Rome’s history, culture and gastronomy also contributed to making the experience truly vivid and engaging. Above all, the Programme enabled me to build lasting connections that will continue well beyond its conclusion.”

The 2026 edition of IPLD Africa Plus was particularly rich in initiatives and events. In the context of the celebrations marking the Institute’s 100th anniversary, participants also had the opportunity to take part in the Centenary Workstream on Contract Law, providing a further occasion for exchange on themes that are central to UNIDROIT’s work and to international legal cooperation.

The first part of the closing day was dedicated to presenting the projects developed by the participants during the Programme. The group work was a particularly meaningful moment in the training experience, highlighting the ability of UNIDROIT instruments to provide useful, applicable references across diverse legal and institutional contexts.

Emphasising the concrete value of this training experience, Khaled Abu Elfotouh Soliman, Vice-President of the Egyptian Council of State – Ministry of Justice, Legislation Department, stated:

“IPLD at UNIDROIT was a stimulating experience that strengthened my commitment to international legal cooperation. It was an honour to present Egypt’s experience in the protection of cultural heritage; I look forward to promoting in Egypt the outcomes of the UNIDROIT-ICC project and the relevant UNIDROIT instruments.”

Through IPLD Africa Plus, UNIDROIT reaffirms, in the year of its Centenary, the fundamental importance of dialogue among legal systems — the very dialogue that inspired the creation of the Institute in 1926 and continues to guide its action at the international level.
