UNIDROIT at International Conference on Civil Aviation Law in Cairo, Egypt

On 12-13 January 2026, UNIDROIT participated remotely in the 1st International Conference on the Legal Framework of Aviation Accidents, Civil Aviation Regulation, Related Disputes, and the Role of the Judiciary and Arbitration in Their Settlement held in Cairo, Egypt.

The Conference was organised by the Egyptian State Lawsuits Authority (ESLA) in cooperation with the German University in Cairo and the Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation. It brought together a broad range of stakeholders, including members of the judiciary, academics, legal practitioners, aviation experts, and government officials, to examine contemporary legal and regulatory challenges relating to aviation accidents, civil aviation governance, and available mechanisms for dispute resolution at the national and international levels.

UNIDROIT was represented by Legal Officer Dr. Philine Wehling, who delivered a remote presentation on “UNIDROIT and the Cape Town Convention: Role, Impact, and Applications in Aviation Law”. Her intervention provided an overview of the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment (Cape Town Convention) system, explaining its objectives and legal architecture, and outlining how the Convention and its Protocols facilitate asset-based financing through the creation and protection of international interests. The presentation focused in particular on the Protocol to the Convention on Matters Specific to Aircraft Equipment (Aircraft Protocol). detailing its structure and practical operation, and highlighting its legal and economic significance in the context of aircraft financing, creditor protection, and the development of the aviation sector.
