UNIDROIT Hosts International Conference on “The Digitalised World and the Transformation of Private Law: Cybernetic Avatars and Beyond

On Friday 13 June 2025 UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC) co-hosted an academic conference titled “The Digitalised World and the Transformation of Private Law: Cybernetic Avatars and Beyond” at its headquarters in Rome in collaboration with the Moonshot Research & Development Program.

The conference brought together distinguished scholars and legal practitioners to examine how rapid advances in artificial intelligence, metaverse technologies, and cybernetic agents are reshaping traditional private law concepts and transnational legal frameworks. The event formed part of UNIDROIT’s broader agenda on digital assets and artificial intelligence, providing an international platform for interdisciplinary engagement and legal innovation.

UNIDROIT Secretary-General Professor Ignacio Tirado delivered opening remarks, followed by a speech on the background of the Project by Professor Souichirou Kozuka. Professor Hideki Kanda then delivered lecture on UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law and Its Implications in Asia.

The conference featured three thematic panels on private law and emerging digital technologies. The first panel, ‘Personhood in the Metaverse’, examined legal personality in virtual environments, moderated by Professor Megumi Hara. The second panel, ‘Finance and AI Agents (Cybernetic Avatars)’, addressed regulatory and ethical challenges posed by AI actors in financial systems, moderated by UNIDROIT Secretary-General Professor Ignacio Tirado. The third panel, ‘Things in the Metaverse’, explored the legal treatment of virtual assets and prospects for harmonised principles, moderated by UNIDROIT Principal Legal Officer Professor Meiling Huang. The event concluded with a keynote titled ‘The Metaverse of Things: The Way Forward, offering a future-oriented view of legal frameworks in virtual economies’.
