In early October 2025, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) participated in the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Sydney, Australia. Organised by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), the IAC is the world’s largest annual event for the global space community.
During IAC2025, UNIDROIT presented at the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) Colloquium on the Law of Outer Space. Contributing to a technical session on “Small Satellites, Public and Private Law Perspectives”, UNIDROIT Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson and Hamza Hameed (Head of Space and Development, Access Partnership) delivered a presentation on “Legal Frameworks for the Securitisation and Transfer of Small Satellites”. The presentation focused on how the Space Protocol to the Cape Town Convention provides an asset based financing model that could facilitate access to credit for new space enterprises in developing countries and emerging markets. The presentation is available here.
UNIDROIT also had the opportunity to participate in a meeting of the Committee for Liaison with International Organisations and Developing Nations (CLIODN), a forum in which UNIDROIT enjoys observer status.
