On 3-4 October 2025, UNIDROIT participated in the international conference entitled ‘4th International Forum of Law School Deans and Jurists Communication and Cooperation among Global Legal Professionals in the Age of AI conference’, hosted by Renmin University of China (RUC). Within the framework of this conference, the UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC), in collaboration with the Renmin University of China Law School, co-hosted the thematic forum ‘Global Legal Responses to Digital Assets’.
Secretary-General of UNIDROIT Professor Ignacio Tirado delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the conference. He extended warm congratulations on the 75th anniversary of the Law School at RUC, and noted that UNIDROIT, approaching its centennial in 2026, has enjoyed very fruitful collaboration with RUC Law School scholars. He emphasised the strength of this partnership and conveyed his wishes for further cooperation in the future.
Thematic Forum: Global Legal Responses to Digital Assets
As part of the conference, the thematic forum ‘Global Legal Responses to Digital Assets’ took place on 3-4 October, co-organised by UNIDROIT ATLC and the RUC Law School. The two-day forum brought together distinguished legal experts, academics, judicial officials, and industry experts from around the world to examine the evolving landscape of digital asset regulation.
The forum featured two thematic sessions. In the first session, ‘Interpretation and Theoretical Development of the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law’, Professor Tirado delivered a keynote speech on the Legal Certainty and Enhanced Markets of Digital Assets: the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law (DAPL). Professor Meiling Huang then presented her insights on the legal framework of rights in digital assets. The second session, ‘The Co-evolution of Digital Asset Private Law and Regulatory Law’, explored enforceability and procedural issues alongside crypto market regulations, drawing comparative insights from the EU, Hong Kong SAR, and mainland China.
A highlight of the event was the focus on the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law (DAPL), which provides a vital framework for establishing legal guidance in digital asset markets. Through comparative analysis and scholarly exchange, spanning topics from private law foundations to regulatory challenges in crypto-asset markets, the forum provided an invaluable platform for international dialogue and knowledge sharing in this critical and rapidly evolving area of law.
Strengthening Institutional Cooperation
UNIDROIT also joined other international guests in a meeting with Professor Lin Shangli, President of Renmin University of China. The discussion reviewed ongoing collaboration between UNIDROIT and RUC, particularly through UNIDROIT’s Scholarship, Internship, and Research Programme, as well as faculty participation in conferences hosted by UNIDROIT. Building on these successful initiatives, both institutions expressed their commitment to deepening cooperation and exploring new opportunities for partnership in the future.
