UNIDROIT Strengthens Academic Collaboration in Saudi Arabia

On 2 and 3 December 2025, UNIDROIT Legal Officer Dr. Philine Wehling participated in the conference “Sustainable Justice: Law, Environment, and Other Pathways to Achieving SDG 16” at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU) in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The event was organized by PMU’s College of Law under the leadership of its Dean, Professor Muamar Hassan Salameh.

Dr. Wehling delivered a keynote address on “Advancing Sustainable Justice through Transnational Commercial Law”, highlighting how instruments like the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC) and the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment (Cape Town Convention) can support sustainable justice and contribute to the achievement of SDG 16. Following the keynote, Dr. Wehling moderated a panel on “Environmental Justice and Legal Frameworks”, guiding a dynamic discussion on the intersections of law, environmental protection, and sustainability, and encouraging participants to consider innovative legal approaches to advancing sustainable development goals.

On 1 December 2025, Dr. Wehling also delivered a dedicated workshop for PMU students, in collaboration with UNIDROIT Correspondent in Egypt, Professor Radwa Elsaman. The session explored the role of international organisations in private law harmonisation, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of UNIDROIT’s mandate, working methodology, and selected legal instruments. Students then engaged with the UPICC through practical examples and case studies, examining its applications across the Arab region. The workshop fostered lively discussion, demonstrating the relevance of transnational commercial law for regional legal development and harmonisation.

UNIDROIT’s participation took place within the framework of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between UNIDROIT and PMU, aimed at deepening academic collaboration. During the visit, Dr. Wehling met with PMU faculty to discuss future initiatives, and it was agreed to expand collaborative activities in 2026.

This mission strengthened UNIDROIT’s visibility and engagement in Saudi Arabia, and across the Gulf region, laying the groundwork for further initiatives to enhance academic cooperation and advance private law harmonisation.
