Seminar on the UNIDROIT Principles at the University of Bremen, Germany

On 20 January 2026, UNIDROIT Legal Officer Dr Philine Wehling delivered a seminar entitled “The UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts: Private Uniform Law and Global Legal Pluralism” at the University of Bremen, Germany, as part of the University’s Master in Transnational Law programme.

The seminar explored the role of the UNIDROIT Principles in harmonising transnational commercial law and bridging diverse legal traditions in international trade. It began by setting the scene with the broader analytical framework of transnational private law harmonisation, exploring its objectives, the key actors involved, and the institutional contexts in which harmonisation and unification processes unfold.

Building on this foundation, the seminar turned to the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC), examining their genesis, underlying purposes and distinctive normative architecture as a tool of private uniform law. Particular attention was then devoted to the practical functions and uses of the UPICC, including their incorporation into international commercial contracts and their growing influence on and their growing influence on legislation as well as the development of case law and arbitral practice at both national and transnational levels

The seminar concluded with a discussion of regional reception and application, drawing on empirical data on the use of the UPICC in the MENA region and illustrating the interplay between global harmonisation efforts and local legal contexts.
