UNIDROIT-RULE Conference in Digital Economy

On 5 March 2026, UNIDROIT, in cooperation with the Royal University of Law and Economics (RULE) of Cambodia, co-organised the conference “Modernising Private Law for the Digital Economy: East Asia–Europe Comparative Perspectives and Cambodian Practice” in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The event brought together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers from Asia and Europe to discuss how private law frameworks are evolving in response to the digital economy and increasingly interconnected commercial transactions.

UNIDROIT Secretary-General Professor Ignacio Tirado delivered a presentation entitled “Modernising Private Law and UNIDROIT: Trading with DA and VCCs”. He provided an overview of UNIDROIT’s work in the harmonisation of private law and highlighted the role of DAPL and the UNIDROIT Principles on the Legal Nature of Verified Carbon Credits, two high-priority projects of the Institute aimed at supporting legal certainty and sustainable development in emerging markets. Professor Meiling Huang, UNIDROIT Principal Legal Officer, Co-Director of the ATLC, delivered a closing remarks, underscoring the value of the institutional partnership and the richness of the exchanges throughout the conference.

The conference concluded with a panel discussion on comparative approaches to private international law and harmonised legal frameworks for the digital economy, providing a valuable platform for dialogue among scholars and practitioners from Asia and Europe and further strengthening cooperation between UNIDROIT and its regional partners.
