Fifth session of the UNIDROIT Working Group on the Private Art Collections – Orphan Objects Projec

From 23 to 25 March 2026, the fifth session of the Working Group on Private Art Collections – Orphan Objects Project was held in hybrid format at the seat of UNIDROIT in Rome. This project, part of UNIDROIT’s 2023–2025 Work Programme on private art collections, is being undertaken in collaboration with the Art-Law Centre of the University of Geneva and the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art (FGA).

The Working Group worked on the basis of a document prepared by the Secretariat reporting the results of the intersession work done in five Sub-Groups. These Sub-Groups, which met several times, were tasked with exchanging on specific issues, drafting proposals for the Guidelines and discussing the commentary to accompany the Guidelines.

The Working Group made significant progress on the basis of such preparatory work and could also discuss the issue of publicisation and dispute resolution. It also decided to continue intersessional work with Sub-Groups to facilitate its work at its next meeting.

A summary report of the fifth session of the Working Group will be published in the coming weeks. The next session of the Working Group is planned to take place in September 2026. More information about the Private Art Collections Project can be found on the UNIDROIT website
