Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law: striving for the improved quality of reinsurance cover

January 25, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

UNIDROIT, ELI and the PRICL Project Group, are pleased to invite you to the 8th ATILA Lecture – special edition:
Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law: striving for the improved quality of reinsurance cover

The event will take place on 25 January 2023 (Wednesday) from 16:00 to 18:00 at the premises of the Institute
for the Unification of Private Law UNIDROIT (Via Panisperna 28, 00184 Rome).

To confirm your participation, please register here.

Reinsurance law presents many challenges. The unique process of contract formation, the lack of consistency in
how reinsurance contract is codified among different jurisdictions and no common understanding of customs
and usages on which reinsurance law is largely based – it all comes down to the lack of legal certainty affecting
the overall quality of reinsurance coverage.

In pursuit of looking for a solution, leading academics from the University of Zurich, University of Frankfurt am
Main and University of Vienna established in 2015 an international project called the Principles of Reinsurance
Contract Law (PRICL). The Project is run in cooperation with UNIDROIT, scholars and (re)insurance practitioners from all over the world.

The PRICL aspires to formulate a “restatement” of existing global reinsurance law and providing the reinsurance
market with transnational uniform soft law rules which are ready to be used in practice. The first volume of the
PRICL was published in 2019 and is publicly available at the PRICL Project’s website. Today, the Project is in its
final phase and the second and last volume is expected to be published by the end of 2024.

The event offers a unique opportunity to find out how the PRICL may solve the abovementioned problems of
reinsurance market and how the Principles could be used in practice, for instance in reinsurance disputes arising
over COVID-19 claims. The presentation will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session.

We highly value discussing ideas in person, strengthening social bonds, and enlarging the community around
the PRICL Project. However, if you cannot join us at UNIDROIT, we also provide the possibility to attend the
Lecture virtually. Please indicate your preference for online participation in the registration form.
