UNIDROIT and the EBRD co-organise International Conference on the MAC and Rail Protocols in London

On 5 September 2025, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) co-organised an international conference titled “facilitating economic growth and trade through equipment finance”- a focus on the Mining, Agriculture and Construction (MAC) Protocol and Rail Protocol”. The conference was hosted by the EBRD at its Headquarters in London, the United Kingdom.

The conference brought together over 90 diplomatic representatives, government officials, private sector representatives and legal experts from 25 countries to discuss how the MAC and Rail Protocols operate in practice and how they contribute to credit expansion and international trade. The conference also examined perspectives from the EBRD regions and beyond, as well as what countries can do to realise the benefits of the MAC and Rail Protocols. During the Conference, UNIDROIT Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado delivered a keynote address on the role of the Cape Town Convention and its Aircraft Protocol in the facilitation of access to credit supporting economic development and the EBRD Deputy General Counsel Alba Bozo delivered opening remarks. UNIDROIT Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano delivered a presentation on the legal operation of the Rail Protocol and Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson provided guidance for States in implementing the Rail and MAC Protocols. The conference agenda is available here.

UNIDROIT expresses its gratitude to the EBRD and in particular the EBRD Legal Transition Programme for hosting the conference, and looks forward to future cooperation between UNIDROIT and EBRD in promoting economic growth and trade through equipment finance.
