UNIDROIT presents its work on the international protection of cultural property to LUISS University

On 12 June 2026, Ms Marina Schneider, Principal Legal Officer and Treaty Depositary, delivered a lecture at the fifth edition of the Master of Law (LL.M) in Art Law of the LUISS University in Rome, in the module entitled “Circulation and Protection of Artworks in International Law”. The lecture focused on introducing the UNIDROIT’s work in the area of the international protection of cultural property.

The lecture first introduced UNIDROIT as an intergovernmental organisation, its membership, working methods and involvement in the international protection of cultural objects. Ms Schneider then presented in-depth the instruments elaborated under the auspices of UNIDROIT in this field – the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects and the UNESCO-UNIDROIT Model Provisions on State Ownership of Undiscovered Cultural Objects.

It was also an opportunity to discuss the ongoing project relating to Private Art Collections – Orphan Objects, which aims at protecting objects with no provenance or gaps in the provenance and assisting collectors in exercising due diligence and provenance research.
