UNIDROIT MARKS ITS CENTENARY IN SEOUL

On 18-19 September 2026, a UNIDROIT delegation headed by Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado including Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano and Senior Legal Officer Jun-Woo Kim travelled to Seoul to take part in the 20th Conference of Chief Justices of Asia and the Pacific (CJAP).

The mission began with a bilateral hosted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Secretary-General Tirado was warmly welcomed by Wook-Jin Chang (Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs), Hyunseung Lee(Director, Treaties Division, International Legal Affairs Bureau), and Hyesu Yang (Third Secretary, Treaties Division, International Legal Affairs Bureau). The meeting focused on the implementation of the Cape Town Convention and the soon to be established UNIDROIT Liaison Office for the Asia Pacific Region.

The Secretary-General was subsequently invited to the Ministry of Justice, where he met with Junha Kang (Deputy Minister, International Legal Affairs Department), Sungkyum Choi (Director, International Legal Policy Division), and Seungeun Choi (Deputy Director, International Legal Policy Division), to underline the importance of enhanced cooperation in light of UNIDROIT’s strong focus on the Asia Pacific Region, and to discuss the enhancement of cooperation between UNIDROIT and Korea based on the involvement of legal experts from Korea in UNIDROIT’s projects as well as accession to the Cape Town Convention. Korea’s enhanced involvement is prospected with particular regard to the new projects on the Work Programme including International Principles on Construction and Engineering Contracts, and the Preparation of a Legal Guide on the Insolvency of Insurance Enterprises and Harmonisation of National Regimes.

Within CJAP, UNIDROIT co-organised a Breakfast Event on the 19th entitled “TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AT THE TURN OF UNIDROIT’S CENTURY”, which was attended by over 40 participants from Australia, Egypt, French Polynesia, Guam, India, Iran, Kenya, Korea, Mongolia, New Caledonia, and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Court for Human Rights, the European Law Institute, the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law, UNCITRAL and WIPO.

The Session was moderated by Justice of the Supreme Court of Korea Youngjoon Kwon and aimed to discuss the cutting-edge developments in private law in light of the rapid evolution of technology and the pursuit of sustainable development, which have given rise to new types of assets. The topic was presented by UNIDROIT’s leadership on the occasion of the organisation’s Centenary, Secretary General Ignacio Tirado and Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano, as well as the President of the European Law Institute Professor Teresa Rodriguez de las Heras Ballell, invited also in her capacity of Specialist on Digital Assets.

UNIDROIT was also featured in a panel with fellow International Organisations moderated by Chief Justice Craig Coxhead (Niue), where Secretary-General Tirado contributed with a Presentation on UNIDROIT’s centenary, particularly in light of UNIDROIT’s historic engagement and enhanced focus in the Asia-Pacific region. The presentation included reflections on UNIDROIT’s interests and the judicial function concerning some of its key instruments, such as the Cape Town Convention and the UNIDROIT Principles on International Commercial Contracts.

 

 

 

 

 

 

UNIDROIT also had the opportunity to liaise closely with both local partners in Seoul and international organisations and networks.

The mission also included the conclusion of an MoU (link to separate news item) with the Korea International Trade Law Association (KITLA) at the CJAP venue, and a meeting with the Director General of Korea Legislation Research Institute (KLRI) at the Yeouido Synergy Work Center
