World Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law in Berlin Celebrates 100 years of UNIDROIT

On 29 September and 1 October 2026, UNIDROIT was cordially invited to Germany to celebrate its Centenary within the context of the quadriennial IACL Congress organised by Professor Stefan Grundmann and hosted by the Humboldt Universität Zu Berlin.

The Congress, that gathered eminent comparative lawyers from all over the world, provided the opportunity to reinforce the already existing cooperation between IACL and UNIDROIT over the past years. The celebrations featured a speech by UNIDROIT Secretary-General Professor Ignacio Tirado followed by the unveiling of a cake with 100 candles, and a celebratory Centenary dinner by invitation of Professors Grundmann, Klaus Hopt, and Jochen Vetter.

The Secretary-General discussed the origins of the Institute and its evolution over the decades, from the world’s first “legal think tank”, to a standard-setting global organisation in the area of transnational private law. In his speech, Prof. Tirado underscored the long-standing partnership between comparatist lawyers and UNIDROIT, and how the IACL, as the world’s main organisation for comparative law, is called upon to continue to work hand in hand with UNIDROIT.

The IACL Congress provided the additional opportunity to discuss various UNIDROIT instruments, with particular regard to the UNIDROIT Principles on International Commercial Contracts (UPICC) and the Berlin Declaration, in a panel moderated by Professor Grundmann and organised by Professors Eckart Brödermann and Pedro Mendoza Montano, with participation of UNIDROIT Deputy Secretary-General Professor Anna Veneziano, UIA past President Carlo Mastellone and Arthur Stüssi.

The UPICC were also addressed in the framework of the discussion on the General Report by Professor Marco Torsello while UNIDROIT President Emerita Professor Maria Chiara Malaguti presented a special report on the ICC IWBL – UNIDROIT project on International Investment Contracts, co-authored by Senior Legal Officer Myrte Thijssen, in the context of the discussion of the General Report by Governing Council Member José Antonio Moreno Rodriguez on Private International Law in Investment Arbitration.
