Cape Town Convention and Aircraft Protocol – Accession by the Republic of Cyprus

On 20 July 2023, His Excellency, Mr Yiorgos Christofides, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cyprus in Italy, accompanied by Ms Kypriani Stavrinaki, Counselor of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Italy, visited UNIDROIT to deposit Cyprus’s instruments of accession to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment and to the Protocol to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment on Matters specific to Aircraft Equipment. H.E. Mr Christofides and Ms Stavrinaki were welcomed by Professor Ignacio Tirado, Secretary-General, Professor Anna Veneziano, Deputy Secretary-General, and Ms Marina Schneider, Principal Legal Officer and Treaty Depositary.

Cyprus made declarations under Articles 39(1)(a), 39(1)(b), 39(4), 40, 53, and 54(2) of the Convention, and under Article XXX(1) of the Aircraft Protocol. The Convention and the Aircraft Protocol will enter into force for Cyprus 1 November 2023. The Secretary-General expressed UNIDROIT’s satisfaction to welcome yet another member of the Cape Town Convention community, and relayed his certainty of the enormous benefits that it will bring to Cyprus already in the immediate future.

Moreover,the Secretary General stressed the enormous potential that the other Protocols of the Cape Town Convention as well as other UNIDROIT instruments may have to decisively underpin Cyprus’s economy by strengthening its legal environment.

On his part, His Excellency, Mr. Christofides stated the following: It is an honour for Cyprus to accede today to the Cape Town Convention and the Aircraft Protocol. Today’s accession is yet another testament to the great value we attribute to international law and its uniform application, as well as yet another proof of the importance we attribute to the work of UNIDROIT in terms of promotion of legal certainty internationally.
