UNIDROIT Centenary Regional Event for Europe & Procedural Law and Dispute Resolution Workstream Workshop

September 1

As part of the celebrations marking 100 years of UNIDROIT, the Institute is organising a series of regional conferences around the world to reflect on the role of international legal harmonisation and on the continuing contribution of UNIDROIT ‘s instruments to the development of private law in each region and beyond. The Unidroit Centenary Regional Conferences bring together academics, judges, practitioners, policymakers, representatives of international organisations, and other public and private stakeholders to discuss the relevance, implementation, and future development of UNIDROIT’s work in the context of the legal traditions and priorities of the respective regions.

This European regional event in Paris is organised in partnership with the European Law Institute (ELI) and forms part of the ELI 2026 Annual Conference, also marking the 15th anniversary of ELI and celebrating the longstanding cooperation between the two institutions.

Following opening remarks and a keynote speech by Fernando Restoy, Chair of the Financial Stability Institute, the programme features three panel discussions exploring (i) the interplay between global and regional harmonisation in private law; (ii) the role of soft law harmonisation of contract law, including lessons from the past and perspectives for the future; and (iii) emerging challenges for legal harmonisation in the fields of new technologies and sustainability.

The final session of the conference will be dedicated to the discussion of a draft UNIDROIT Centenary White Paper on Civil Procedure and Dispute Resolution, prepared by the Committee of the Workstream on Procedural Law and Dispute Resolution, The draft White Paper reviews UNIDROIT’s contributions in this field and identifies potential directions for future projects as part of the core scientific programme of UNIDROIT’s Centenary programme in this thematic area. UNIDROIT has established a number of thematic Workstreams to the Institute’s achievements, assess current developments, and identify priorities for future work.

The concluding roundtable will provide an opportunity for experts and stakeholders to discuss the draft and its preliminary recommendations before the final White Paper is submitted to the joint session of UNIDROIT’s Governing Council and General Assembly in December 2026.
