UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre

Overview

The Asia-Pacific region, home to over 4.5 billion people, is renowned for its linguistic, cultural, and legal diversity. As globalisation continues to drive economic and social development in this region, effective communication and mutual understanding of various legal systems become increasingly important. Legal documents, including statutes, regulations, treaties, and case law, are often written in different languages and adhere to distinct legal traditions, posing challenges for trade, investment, and justice.

To address these challenges, the Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC) was established by UNIDROIT in 2024, as an initiative under the UNIDROIT Academy.

We are pleased to announce the opening of the registration for the Second Edition of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC) International Arbitration Moot, co-organised by the UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC) and the Beijing Arbitration Commission / Beijing International Arbitration Court / China (Beijing) Securities and Futures Arbitration Center (“BAC/BIAC”).

Introduction

The Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC) was established by UNIDROIT in 2024, as an initiative under the UNIDROIT Academy. The ATLC aims to promote the work of UNIDROIT and its international legal instruments and projects in the Asia Pacific region. This initiative seeks to strengthen the connection between relevant stakeholders in Asia and UNIDROIT, fostering legal cooperation and economic integration among countries in the Asia Pacific region.

The UPICC was developed by UNIDROIT. Since its initial adoption in 1994, the UPICC has become one of the world’s most important international soft law instruments in the field of international contract law.

Under the auspices of the ATLC, the first edition of UPICC International Arbitration Moot was formally launched in November 2024. The UPICC Moot marks a significant step in promoting the use of the UPICC within the region’s burgeoning commercial arbitration community. Through its collaborative and practical approach, the UPICC Moot seeks to foster the development of a new generation of legal professionals with deep expertise in the use of the UPICC to facilitate effective dispute resolution. The UPICC Moot achieves this objective by simulating arbitration proceedings applying the UPICC Principles to a hypothetical commercial arbitration case.

The first edition of UPICC Moot achieved remarkable success and broad recognition. Of the 39 registered teams, 26 teams from 10 Asian countries competed in the preliminary rounds, which brought together nearly 150 participants and 70 distinguished arbitrators. The final rounds drew nearly 55 participants and featured a distinguished panel of arbitrators and legal experts from 6 jurisdictions. Building on the success of the first edition and marking the UNIDROIT Centenary, the second edition of the UPICC Moot is now open for applications.
