2026 UNIDROIT ATLC Summer School Successfully Held in Shanghai

The 2026 UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC) Summer School was officially opened on 22 June 2026 at the East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) in Shanghai, China. At its second edition, and convened in the year of UNIDROIT’s centenary, the 2026 ATLC Summer School gathered 102 participants from 32 jurisdictions, taught by a teaching faculty drawn from 10 jurisdictions, underscoring the broad international scope of this year’s programme. Co-organised by the UNIDROIT ATLC and ECUPL, with the support of the Hong Kong International Legal Talents Training Office, the Summer School reflected UNIDROIT’s commitment to capacity-building and its role in advancing legal cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region, with the two-week curriculum covering 12 Unidroit instruments and ongoing projects.

In his opening address, Secretary-General  Professor Ignacio Tirado noted that UNIDROIT has continuously worked on private law harmonisation now for over a century, and that the ATLC Summer School extends this mission across the Asia-Pacific. He encouraged participants to make the most of the two weeks, actively engage with participants from diverse legal traditions, and contribute to the common goal of cross‑jurisdictional legal cooperation.

Beyond the classroom, the programme gave participants a broader view of legal practice across different jurisdictions. A group of participants traveled to Hong Kong SAR, visiting the Department of Justice, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) and the High Court of Hong Kong, where insights into the region’s dispute resolution landscape and Hong Kong SAR’s common law system were provided. Participants enjoyed a full-day tour of the city to explore the history and heritage of Shanghai. The programme also included a visit to the Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress, followed by visits to several of the Shanghai specialised courts, offering participants valuable insight into the practical workings of the local judicial system.

The Summer School was closed on 3 July 2026 with remarks by UNIDROIT Deputy Secretary-General Professor Anna Veneziano. She thanked ECUPL and all those who had contributed to the programme and encouraged participants to build lasting professional connections and carry forward the spirit of cooperation fostered during their time in Shanghai. As UNIDROIT marks its first century, the second edition of the ATLC Summer School reflects the growing importance of cultivating legal professionals equipped to work across jurisdictions. By bringing together students, scholars and practitioners from around the world in Shanghai, the programme advances mutual understanding among different legal systems and reaffirms UNIDROIT’s enduring commitment to the harmonization of private law and to international legal cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
