UNIDROIT and the China Scholarship Council sign MOU to facilitate research and internship opportunities

On 25 November 2024, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) received a delegation from the China Scholarship Council (CSC) at the UNIDROIT Headquarters in Rome to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) facilitating additional research and internship opportunities at UNIDROIT. Under the MOU, the CSC will provide funding for UNIDROIT to annually select a number of Chinese senior interns and research fellows to travel to Rome and undertake internships and research stays, which will support the negotiation and implementation of UNIDROIT instruments.

Led by CSC Deputy Secretary-General Ms LI Qing, the Chinese delegation consisted of CSC Deputy Director the Department of Personnel Ministry of Education Mr ZHANG Jianming, CSC Deputy Director of the Division of Overseas Talent Selection and Training Mr YANG Liguo, CSC Project Officer Ms HOU Yilin, as well as Councillor YU Xingguo and First Secretary Junyan XIONG from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Italy. The delegation was received by UNIDROIT Secretary General Professor Ignacio TIRADO, Deputy Secretary General Professor Anna VENEZIANO, Asian Transnational Law Centre Co-Director Professor Meiling HUANG and Senior Legal Officer Mr William BRYDIE-WATSON. Following the signing ceremony, CSC and UNIDROIT discussed arrangements for the initiation of procedures under the MOU, which will allow UNIDROIT to receive the first CSC-funded senior interns and research fellows in 2025.

The China Scholarship Council is a government entity under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China that provides support for international academic exchanges and funding for Chinese citizens to study abroad. Over the last decade, the CSC had provided financial support for a number of Chinese citizens to undertake scholarships and internships at UNIDROIT.
