UNIDROIT celebrates its Centenary with the Asia-Pacific Conference in Beijing

On 30 October 2026, a UNIDROIT delegation headed by Secretary-General Professor Ignacio Tirado, and including Deputy Secretary-General Professor Anna Veneziano, Attaché to the Secretary-General Professor Meiling Huang, Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson and Senior Professional Officer Junyan Xiong, took part in the UNIDROIT Centenary Conference for the Asia-Pacific & Academic Conference on the Evolution of International Commercial Law and Legal Developments in the Digital Age, held in Beijing, People’s Republic of China.

The event was co-organised by UNIDROIT and the Beijing Arbitration Commission/Beijing International Arbitration Court (BAC/BIAC), with the support of the China Civil Law Society and the China Society of Private International Law. Held as part of the series of regional conferences marking UNIDROIT’s Centenary, and in the year of the 40th anniversary of China’s accession to UNIDROIT, the Conference brought together over 500 participants, including representatives of the Supreme People’s Court, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Commerce, as well as judges, arbitrators, academics and practitioners from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

In his keynote address, Secretary-General Tirado reflected on a century of the Institute’s work towards the harmonisation and modernisation of private law, from its establishment in Rome in 1926 to an intergovernmental organisation of 65 Member States across five continents. Looking ahead to UNIDROIT’s second century, he highlighted the Institute’s commitment to responding to the legal needs arising from new technologies and markets, drawing on all legal traditions. He underlined the essential role of China and the wider Asia-Pacific region in this endeavour, to be further strengthened by the forthcoming UNIDROIT Liaison Office for the Asia-Pacific Region in Hong Kong SAR, China.

A highlight of the Conference was the launch of the Digital Economy Legal Project, a three-year joint UNIDROIT and BAC/BIAC initiative that will support the implementation of the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law (DAPL) through comparative research on judicial and arbitral practice in the Asia-Pacific Region.

The Conference featured three panels: the first examined the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC), which over three decades have become a widely used neutral reference for courts, arbitral tribunals and legislators, including in the Asia-Pacific region; the second focused on the DAPL Principles and their role in providing legal certainty for cross-border digital asset transactions as jurisdictions in the region develop their own frameworks; and the third addressed the Cape Town Convention and its Protocols, which underpin the financing of high-value mobile equipment worldwide, and the role of arbitration in the enforcement of rights under that framework. Together, the panels illustrated how instruments developed at different stages of UNIDROIT’s history continue to meet the needs of cross-border commerce today.

In closing, UNIDROIT conveyed its appreciation to BAC/BIAC for a partnership that has grown since the International Conference on Digital Asset Transactions and Legal Protection co-hosted in Beijing in 2025, as well as to the supporting institutions and all participants. As part of the Centenary celebrations, the Conference reflected both the legacy of UNIDROIT’s work and the growing contribution of the Asia-Pacific region to it. Looking ahead, UNIDROIT reaffirmed its commitment to bringing more Asia-Pacific perspectives into its work as the Institute enters its second century.
