UNIDROIT delivers lecture at the Rio de Janeiro State University

On 7 October 2026, UNIDROIT Legal Consultant Dr Theodora Kostoula delivered an online guest lecture to postgraduate students at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Brazil, as part of a Comparative Law seminar bringing together Master’s and PhD students. The seminar was organised by Professor Marilda Rosado and Professor Ely Caetano Xavier Junior of UERJ’s Faculty of Law.

The lecture explored UNIDROIT’s role in the harmonisation of private law, with particular emphasis on the importance of comparative legal analysis in developing international legal instruments. Dr Kostoula also introduced UNIDROIT’s working methods and focused on the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law (DAPL Principles) as a practical illustration of this methodology. Dr Kostoula outlined the development of the Principles and examined their approach to key private law issues arising from digital assets, highlighting how comparative legal analysis can contribute to the development of internationally relevant solutions in an emerging area of law.

Following the lecture, students took part in an interactive case study, which provided an opportunity to apply the DAPL Principles. The seminar concluded with a lively exchange of views on the interaction between international private law harmonisation and domestic legal systems, underscoring the relevance of UNIDROIT’s work to comparative legal scholarship and education.
