On 6 June, UNIDROIT proudly launched the 2025 edition of its flagship International Programme for Law and Development (IPLD) – Africa Plus with a successful online opening session. This fourth and most expansive edition has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The virtual session was opened by UNIDROIT President Professor Maria Chiara Malaguti and Deputy Secretary-General Professor Anna Veneziano, who were joined by Mr. Federico Dimonopoli, Counsellor at the Service for Legal Affairs, and Mr. Federico Pucillo, Secretary of Legation at the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Welcoming the 2025 cohort, Professor Malaguti expressed her strong support for the initiative:
“This year, the programme truly lives up to the ‘Plus’ in its name. Thanks to the additional support from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, we have been able to welcome more participants and engage with a broader range of countries across the African continent. This expansion means a stronger impact and greater opportunities for meaningful exchange.”
Professor Veneziano echoed these sentiments:
“You have been selected through a highly competitive process, and we are eager to engage in rich professional dialogue with each of you. Your perspectives on the legal priorities of your countries will enrich our collective understanding of UNIDROIT’s instruments and the broader themes of legal harmonisation and international cooperation.”
Following the institutional greetings, participants introduced themselves, sharing their professional and academic backgrounds as well as their aspirations for the programme. Representing a diverse range of legal institutions and sectors across Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Egypt, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, this dynamic cohort is now set to embark on an intensive week of online lectures and seminars.
The online phase will be followed by a three-week in-person session in Rome starting in mid-June, featuring interactive discussions, project presentations and networking opportunities.
UNIDROIT warmly welcomes the new cohort of IPLD Africa Plus 2025 and wishes them a fruitful and enriching learning journey.
