UNIDROIT PARTICIPATES IN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP ON FIGHTING ILLICIT TRAFFICKING OF CULTURAL PROPERTY IN PAKISTAN

UNIDROIT was invited to participate in the International Conference and Capacity Building Workshop on Fighting the Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Properties in Pakistan, held in Karachi from 21 to 23 October 2025.

At the invitation of UNESCO and the Directorate General of Antiquities & Archaeology of Sindh, UNIDROIT, represented by Ms Marina Schneider, Principal Legal Officer and Treaty Depositary, presented at the conference the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects, which Pakistan signed in 1996.

The workshop brought together national stakeholders — including law enforcement agencies, customs, judiciary, and cultural authorities — as well as international organizations such as UNESCO, INTERPOL, UNODC, and ICOM. Discussions focussed on strengthening the legal and operational frameworks for preventing and combating the illicit trafficking of cultural property, and on enhancing cooperation between relevant institutions. The participants recalled in the recommendations the importance of the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention and recommended ratification.

UNIDROIT’s participation highlighted the Organisation’s continuing commitment to supporting the implementation of its international instruments that protect cultural heritage and promote the restitution and return of stolen or illegally exported cultural objects.
