UNIDROIT takes part in training course on the protection of cultural heritage for Senegalese delegation

On 13 October 2026, Ms Marina Schneider, Principal Legal Officer and Treaty Depositary, took part in a training course organised by the Comando Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale at the “La Marmora” Barracks in Rome. The training was aimed at 12 officers from the Senegalese National Gendarmerie and focused on the protection of cultural heritage and the fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural property.

On this occasion, Ms Schneider gave a presentation entitled “International law on the protection of cultural property. Conventions: The Hague, 1954 – Paris, 1970 – UNIDROIT, 1995”. Senegal is a signatory to the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects but has not yet ratified. It was an opportunity to highlight the importance of this Convention, its synergy with other international instruments to which Senegal is a Party, and the role of law enforcement agencies in implementation.

Indeed, the Senegalese Government reiterated that it is the legal and operational responsibility of law enforcement to prevent the destruction, theft, and illicit trafficking of cultural property, and that the country is working to establish a Special Section for the Protection of Cultural Heritage within the National Gendarmerie, as well as to revise its law on the protection of cultural property.

UNIDROIT is delighted to support Senegal in this legislative process.
