UNIDROIT and Egyptian State Lawsuits Authority Sign Cooperation Agreement

Rome/Cairo, 29 April 2026 — UNIDROIT and the Egyptian State Lawsuits Authority (ESLA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a virtual ceremony held on 29 April 2026. The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation in legal and judicial training, capacity-building initiatives, and the promotion of international legal dialogue across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The MoU was signed by UNIDROIT Secretary-General Professor Ignacio Tirado and Counsellor Dr Hussein Madkour, President of ESLA. Through the partnership, the two institutions aim to develop joint activities in areas including international commercial law, dispute resolution, and professional training for judges, counsellors, and legal practitioners.
The ceremony was attended by UNIDROIT Legal Officer Dr Philine Wehling and a delegation from ESLA, including Counsellor Ahmed Saad Abdel Aaty, Head of the ESLA Judicial Studies, Training, International Cooperation and Cultural Center (JSTICC), together with Counsellor Yousra Mohamed Kamal Abdel Fattah, Counsellor Mohamed Mohamed Abdelwahab El Iraqi, Counsellor Dr Abdel Rahman Ibrahim Ahmed Anwar, and Counsellor Ahmed Mostafa El Mohamady El Feky, all members of JSTICC.
The discussions built on the existing cooperation between the two institutions. Earlier this year, UNIDROIT and ESLA jointly organised a training seminar on the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC) for members of the Egyptian judiciary, representing an important first step in their shared capacity-building efforts. The parties also discussed the development of a broader joint programme on international commercial law and dispute resolution for judges, counsellors, and legal practitioners from Egypt and the wider region.
This new partnership reflects UNIDROIT’s continued commitment to strengthening collaboration with key institutional partners throughout the MENA region.
