MOROCCO ACCEDES TO THE 1995 UNIDROIT CONVENTION ON STOLEN OR ILLEGALLY EXPORTED CULTURAL OBJECTS

The instrument of accession of the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention, together with the compulsory declarations, has been deposited by the Kingdom of Morocco with the Italian Government, Depositary of the Convention, on 3 August 2022. The Convention will enter into force for Morocco on 1 February 2023.

This accession strengthens the legal framework to protect the heritage of Morocco and to fight against illicit trafficking in cultural objects.

By acceding to the Convention, Morocco adopts, for the future, specific mechanisms facilitating the restitution and return of stolen and illegally exported cultural objects.

Morocco becomes the 54th Contracting State to the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention.
