UNIDROIT welcomes the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to strengthen cooperation

On Monday 25 March 2024, UNIDROIT welcomed a high-level delegation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at the seat of UNIDROIT in Rome. The President of UNIDROIT Maria Chiara Malaguti, Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano, and Prof. Louise Gullifer, Senior Legal Consultant, met with Mr Thomas M. Clark, General Counsel, Ms Christina Pak, Principal Counsel, and Hon. Justice Antonio Herman Benjamin, President of the Global Judicial Institute on the Environment and the National High Court of Brazil (STJ). The meeting, which followed the fruitful visit of a UNIDROIT delegation headed by the Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado at the ABD Headquarters in Manila in 2022 and the active participation of ADB’s representatives in UNIDROIT’s projects since then, aimed to strengthen cooperation between UNIDROIT and ADB and to explore further areas of mutual interest. The ADB delegation presented the Model Forest Act Initiative and their project on regional technical assistance to empower smallholder farmers through access to finance. The ensuing discussion particularly focused on the private law instruments to combat climate change including the current UNIDROIT project on the Legal Nature of Voluntary Carbon Credit, and to foster access to credit for MSMEs, including the draft UNCITRAL/UNIDROIT Model Law on warehouse receipts, the UNIDROIT Model Law on Factoring, and the implementation of the Cape Town Convention Protocols.
