On 16 May 2025, UNIDROIT and ICC Tunisia jointly organised a landmark conference in Tunis entitled “Les Principes d’UNIDROIT et l’arbitrage international: un cadre émergent pour le règlement des conflits dans la région MENA.” The event, held exclusively in person, brought together over 100 participants, including arbitrators, judges, lawyers, government officials, academics, and students, for a high-level discussion on the growing significance of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts in international arbitration across the MENA region.
The conference programme was structured around four thematic panels. The first panel explored the role of the UNIDROIT Principles as a key instrument for harmonising international commercial law. The second examined the flexibility that arbitration offers as a framework for applying these Principles in practice. The third provided a comparative analysis of the application of the Principles in arbitration across Maghreb and Gulf countries. The final panel concluded the day with an open discussion on the future of international arbitration in the region and the ongoing integration of the UNIDROIT Principles into arbitral practice.
UNIDROIT President Professor Maria Chiara Malaguti and Selma Babbou, Vice-President of ICC Tunisia, delivered the opening and closing remarks. Professor Malaguti also participated in the second panel, where she presented the joint UNIDROIT–ICC project on International Investment Contracts.
