Rome, 21 May 2025 — UNIDROIT Legal Officer Philine Wehling delivered a lecture titled “UNIDROIT and the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts” to postgraduate students enrolled in the Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Trade Law programme at the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITC-ILO). The session was conducted online as part of the programme’s academic curriculum.
This prestigious LL.M. is jointly organised by the ITC-ILO in partnership with UNIDROIT, UNCITRAL, the University Institute of European Studies, and the University of Turin, in collaboration with the Turin School of Development.
Ms Wehling’s lecture offered students a comprehensive overview of UNIDROIT’s mandate and its working methods. It then focussed on the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC), discussing their preparatory history and content as well as the ways in which the UPICC have been contributing to the harmonisation of international commercial contracts, dispute settlements and national legal reforms. The various ways in which the Principles can be used and the benefits of their application were illustrated by practical examples and a regional case study of the Principles’ application in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The lecture concluded with insights into the broader role of the UNIDROIT Principles as a foundation for developing other international contractual instruments and their growing significance as a source of general contract law in transnational practice.
UNIDROIT remains committed to advancing legal harmonisation through education and collaboration with leading international institutions and academic programmes.
