UNIDROIT IN JAKARTA FOR INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP AND MINISTERIAL MEETINGS

On 6 – 7 of November, the Secretary-General a.i. Professor Anna Veneziano and Senior Legal Officer Ms Frédérique Mestre were invited to Jakarta for Ministerial meetings and to speak at an International Workshop entitled “Improving Small Scale Farmers’ Welfare” organised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia.

 

The Workshop, on the 6th of November, was organised to present the UNIDROIT-FAO-IFAD Legal Guide on Contract Farming (LGCF) in Indonesia, as well as to provide insight as to its implementation thanks to the participation of the FAO and IFAD regional offices. Opened by Mr. Tri Purnajaya (Acting DG for Multilateral Cooperation,   Ministry   of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia), Mr. Yanuar Nugroho  (Deputy II, Presidential Staff Office), and Dr. Ir Mat Syukur (Special Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture on International Trade), the Workshop featured a Keynote Speech delivered by H.E. Mr. A.M. Fachir (Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia), and an introduction of  UNIDROIT, FAO and IFAD by Mr Royhan N. Wahab (First Secretary, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Rome). Dr. Bayu Krisnamurthi (former  Vice-Minister  of  Agriculture and Vice-Minister of Trade) then delivered a presentation on the challenges and opportunities for Indonesian Small Farmers in Economic International Diplomacy. The Workshop proceeded with a presentation of UNIDROIT and UNIDROIT’s work in the field of agriculture and LGCF by Professor Veneziano and Ms Mestre, and presentations on Financial Access for small -holder farmers by Ronald Hartman (Country Director, IFAD), and on FAO’s Role in Small-scale Farmers Development by Mark Smulders (FAO Representative). The presentations were followed by an ample debate.  During her stay in Indonesia, the Secretary General a.i. also met Dr. iur. Damos Dumoli Agusman (Director General for Legal Affairs and International Treaties) to discuss Indonesia’s involvement in UNIDROIT’s activities and the utility of implementing UNIDROIT instruments in Indonesia.
