UNIDROIT Insights: Briefing and Discussion held at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)

On 26 January 2026, UNIDROIT participated in the event “UNIDROIT Insights: Briefing and Discussion”, hosted by the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), in a hybrid format.

The event was organised under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Ida Madieha Bt Abdul Ghani Azmi, Dean of AIKOL, and moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cheong May Fong (UNSW Sydney). It aimed to introduce UNIDROIT to the Malaysian legal community and to foster discussion on its relevance to Malaysia.

UNIDROIT Deputy Secretary-General Prof. Anna Veneziano delivered an online presentation providing an overview of UNIDROIT as an independent intergovernmental organisation, its mandate, and key areas of work. She also introduced the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC), highlighting their development, structure, and practical uses in international contracting, arbitration, and legislative reform.

This was followed by a presentation by UNIDROIT Principal Legal Officer and Co-Director of the Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC), Prof. Meiling Huang, who introduced the ATLC as a new initiative under the UNIDROIT Academy. Prof. Huang outlined the Centre’s objectives, such as promoting UNIDROIT’s work in Asia, strengthening cooperation with regional stakeholders, fostering legal research, training, and capacity-building through scholarships, internships, publications, and academic events.

The presentations were followed by an interactive discussion session with participants, focusing on the potential role of UNIDROIT instruments in Malaysia and the broader Asian region. The event provided a valuable platform for dialogue between UNIDROIT and Malaysian academics, practitioners, and students, and contributed to strengthening engagement with the Malaysian legal community.
