UNIDROIT Participates in ITC-ILO Master of Laws in International Trade Law

On 22 May 2024, UNIDROIT’s Deputy Secretary General Professor Anna Veneziano and Legal Consultant Benedetta Mauro delivered a lecture titled “An introduction to the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts” to postgraduate students of the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITC-ILO) online.

The lecture was part of the Master of Laws in International Trade Law programme, which is organised by the ITC-ILO in partnership with UNIDROIT, UNCITRAL, the University Institute of European Studies, and the University of Turin, and in collaboration with the Turin School of Development.

The lecture featured an introduction to UNIDROIT’s mandate and working methods, and to the origin and content of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts. The first part of the lecture then focussed on the ways in which the UNIDROIT Principles can be used, with several practical examples of decisions that applied them either as the law governing the contract or as a tool to interpret or suplement the otherwise applicable domestic law. Subsequently, the role of the UNIDROIT Principles as general contract law in the development of other contractual guidance instruments was explored. The last part of the lecture featured a case study, using the UNIDROIT Principles’ rules on Hardship to illustrate other possible applications of the Principles, namely, as a model for national legislators, as a tool to interpret or supplement international the CISG, and as a model for contract drafting.
