UNIDROIT PARTICIPATES IN THE 27th ICOM GENERAL CONFERENCE 2025 IN DUBAI

UNIDROIT was invited to participate in the General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), held in Dubai from 11 to 17 November 2024.

UNIDROIT was represented by Ms Marina Schneider, Principal Legal Officer & Treaties Depositary, who contributed actively, with UNESCO and INTERPOL, to the side event organised on 12th November focusing on the fight against illicit trafficking in cultural goods and the role of digital tools.

In her first presentation, Ms Schneider highlighted how the digital tools developed by UNIDROIT’s partners support better implementation of the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects, contributing altogether to the creation of a comprehensive digital ecosystem that strengthens the prevention, protection and restitution of cultural heritage.

Her second presentation focused on UNIDROIT’s ongoing project on private art collections and orphan objects, outlining the potential development of a dedicated platform designed to facilitate clarity, transparency, and responsible practices in the management of such objects. She warmly invited museum professionals to join the dialogue and contribute their expertise as this initiative continues to evolve.

Participation in this event underscores UNIDROIT’s strong commitment to working with its partners to advance global efforts against illicit trafficking and to foster innovative, technology-driven solutions that safeguard cultural heritage worldwide.

UNIDROIT congratulates Mr Antonio Rodríguez, the new President of ICOM, elected during the 27th ICOM General Conference on 14 November 2025. He will lead the organisation for the 2025-2028 term and UNIDROIT looks forward to continuing our longstanding cooperation.
