UNIDROIT presents its work on sustainable development to Sapienza University

On 5 June 2026, Legal Officers Ms Giulia Previti and Dr. Priscila Pereira de Andrade represented the UNIDROIT Secretariat in an online lecture for the Master Program in International Business Law of the University of Rome La Sapienza. The lecture focused on introducing UNIDROIT’s work in the area of sustainable development.

Sustainable development is a topic that cuts across UNIDROIT’s projects, instruments and activities. The presentation highlighted in particular the Institute’s work on verified carbon credits (VCCs) and in the area of agriculture and private law.

The lecture first introduced the concept of sustainable development and the ways in which UNIDROIT’s work advances sustainable development across its multiple dimensions as measured by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The lesson then focused on specific instruments, starting with the draft UNIDROIT Principles on the Legal Nature of Verified Carbon Credits. Ms Previti underscored the Principles’ goal to support climate finance by providing much-needed guidance on private law issues so to enhance confidence in VCC transactions and further the development of a well-functioning carbon market.

The second half of the lecture focused on the legal guides jointly developed by UNIDROIT, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Dr Pereira de Andrade explained how the Legal Guide on Contract Farming (2015), the Legal Guide on Agricultural Land Investment Contracts (2021) and the future Legal Guide on Collaborative Legal Structures for Agricultural Enterprises operationalise several UN Sustainable Development Goals through the provision of recommendations and identification of best practices.
