UNIDROIT takes part in a capacity-building workshop for North African countries on the protection of cultural property

UNIDROIT was invited by the Algerian Ministry of Culture and Arts and the UNESCO Regional Office to take part in a regional meeting of North African countries on “The preservation and promotion of museums and collections, their diversity and their role in society”, which took place in Algiers on 18-19 May 2025.

The session on “Restitution, the fight against illicit trafficking and a moral code/ethics” addressed the role of museums in implementing the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects, as well as efforts in the region to combat illicit trafficking of cultural property and secure the restitution of displaced objects. Presentations also addressed the legal, diplomatic, and logistical obstacles that countries face, along with the tools available to improve traceability and strengthen institutional resilience. Finally, the provenance of objects and the ethical and deontological dimensions of collection management were also discussed.

Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco are all Parties to the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention, while Mauritania and Libya are making progress towards accession, with UNIDROIT supporting them in the process.
