A Walk through UNIDROIT’s History: the Historical Archives Project

The archive of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) preserves documents produced as part of the Institute’s activities from its foundation in 1926 to the present day. It is a valuable tool to better understand the Institute’s history, and the origins of this international organization, created with the mission of bringing legal cultures closer together, facilitating greater exchange between states and thereby fostering global economic development and peaceful relations.

The archive also provides a better understanding of Italy’s international and diplomatic relations over the decades, as UNIDROIT’s host state.

The documentation, including highly specialized heritage on matters of international private law, is preserved in a dedicated annexe in the UNIDROIT library and occupies a total of approximately 300 linear meters, equivalent to approximately 2,700 folders.

The Archive houses extensive correspondence relating to studies conducted for the development of the instruments and related conferences and seminars; relations with Member States and relevant reports; minutes and documents of the General Assembly; minutes and documents of the Governing Council; accounting documentation of the Finance Committee; documentation relating to amendments to the Statute; preparatory materials and studies relating to committees of experts and diplomatic conferences for the development of international instruments; legislative collections; meeting agendas; payment orders, etc.

Approximately 131 linear meters are dedicated to the most historically significant part of the archive, as they represent the original and oldest documentary core of the entire UNIDROIT archival holdings.

These documents contain the first statutes, conventions, and international correspondence that attest to the birth of UNIDROIT and its initial internal organization.

Recovery and Enhancement Project

________________________________________

For the UNIDROIT Centenary celebrations, all the material contained in the historical archive has undergone a thorough reorganization. The project was launched in October 2023, under the supervision and collaboration of the Archival and Bibliographic Superintendence of Lazio (SAB Lazio) and with the support of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (DG-A-Service II – Archival Heritage), which has deemed the Institute’s archival holdings worthy of further study, restoration, and scholarly exploration. A significant training program has been implemented in parallel with the project and, thanks to the support of the Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna, UNIDROIT has been able to host two interns, recent graduates of the School of Archival Science, Paleography, and Diplomatics of the State Archives of Bologna. The interns have been able to apply their knowledge and gain unique experience by working on a unique, internationally recognized, advanced training project.

The oldest material found in the archives is also undergoing major restoration work.

The project planned thus far is aimed at enhancing UNIDROIT’s archival holdings, making them accessible not only in preparation for the centenary celebrations, but also for consultation and study purposes, as well as for internal by Institute staff. Through reorganization, inventory, and computerized catalogues, with the addition of a unique progressive numbering system, the archival material has been aligned with the guidelines and criteria for the archival description of documents and current national and international standards.

The UNIDROIT Archive is now on the fast track to be declared of significant historical and national interest by SAB Lazio, and the documents that are deemed to be the most historically relevant will be digitized and made available online for open consultation.
