Constitution of the Roma Tre – UNIDROIT Centre for Transnational Commercial Law and International Arbitration

On 22 September 2023, UNIDROIT and Roma Tre University School of Law hosted a dinner to celebrate the constitution of the Roma Tre – UNIDROIT Centre for Transnational Commercial Law and International Arbitration. The Centre aims at promoting research and academic scholarship on transnational commercial law and international arbitration.

At the event, Co-directors Prof. Maria Chiara Malaguti (President of UNIDROIT) and Prof. Giacomo Rojas Elgueta (Professor of Private Law at Roma Tre University School of Law) presented the Centre’s structure and objectives to a limited number of guests coming from public institutions, academia, business organisations and law firms.

The dinner was held after the tenth annual University of Roma Tre – UNIDROIT Annual International Arbitration Lecture, which was delivered by Alexis Mourre on the topic “The UNIDROIT Principles as a Tool for the Internationalisation of Contracts by Arbitral Tribunals”.

The Annual Lecture had over 250 registered participants, of which over 100 attended in person, with the rest participating via Zoom. Following welcome remarks from Prof. Maria Chiara Malaguti and Prof. Andrea Zoppini (Professor of Civil Law at Roma Tre University School of Law), Mr Mourre addressed the question of whether the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts, being widely considered a codification of internationally-recognised general principles of contract law, offer a possible legal basis for the application of non-national principles to international arbitration. A lively debate followed Mr Mourre’s lecture.

The annual lecture is one of many joint initiatives between UNIDROIT and Roma Tre University School of Law, which led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions on 15 November 2021, that are now taking place under the auspices of the Roma Tre – UNIDROIT Centre for Transnational Commercial Law and International Arbitration.
