PRICL 2025 Launch in London

The Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law (PRICL) were launched in London on 3 November 2025, at Lloyd’s of London. The PRICL project, developed with in cooperation with the Universities of Zurich and Frankfurt (and formerly Vienna), which involves the participation of academics and practitioners from different jurisdictions, is aimed at the formulation of a “restatement” of existing global reinsurance law and to provide a uniform codification of international reinsurance contract practices to improve legal certainty in the industry. The new edition of the PRICL will improve legal certainty in areas where reinsurance practitioners felt there was a need for clearer rules. They incorporate general contract law principles from the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC).

UNIDROIT Secretary-General Professor Ignacio Tirado opened the programme together with Arabella Ramage of the Lloyd’s Market Association, introducing prominent speakers such as Helmut Heiss (University of Zurich), Franziska Arnold-Dwyer (University College London), Ray Koh (Lloyd’s Market Association), Tom Hughes (International Underwriting Association) and Lari Kuitunen (of P&C Insurance Company ). Manfred Wandt (Goethe University Frankfurt/Main) closed the event.
