UNIDROIT contributes to APEC Economic Committee Workshop on Secured Finance to Facilitate Sustainable Economic Growth and Improve Food Security in Tokyo

Between 6 – 8 October 2025, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) participated in a workshop held by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum on “Secured Finance to Facilitate Sustainable Economic Growth and Improve Food Security”.  The purpose of the workshop was to discuss how the implementation of international instruments could improve access to finance in the agricultural sector in the Asia Pacific region. The workshop had over 60 registered participants from government, the legal sector, industry and academia, including Governmental officials from Indonesia, Viet Nam, Thailand, Peru, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, the Philippines, China (Hong Kong) and Chinese Taipei.

The workshop focused primarily on the benefits of the Mining, Agriculture and Construction (MAC) Protocol to the Cape Town Convention, while also featuring panels on the UNCITRAL-UNIDROIT Model Law on Warehouse Receipts and the UNIDROIT Model Law on Leasing. During the workshop, UNDIROIT Deputy Secretary-General delivered an expert presentation on the transactions facilitated by the MAC Protocol, while UNIDROIT Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson provided an overview presentation of UNIDROIT’s work in the fields of access to credit and agricultural law, and moderated several panels dedicated to the MAC Protocol. The workshop represented an important milestone in relation to UNIDROIT’s engagement with APEC, as it was UNIDROIT’s first opportunity to present an in-depth explanation of several important instruments in order to assist APEC Member Economies with implementation. The workshop agenda can be found here.
