UNIDROIT Pays Tribute to Professor Guido Alpa: Celebrating the Legacy of a Jurist Without Borders

On 4 June 2025, UNIDROIT joined leading academic and legal institutions in Rome to honour the remarkable legacy of Professor Guido Alpa at the conference “Guido Alpa, Maestro e Avvocato: Profilo di un giurista eclettico senza confini” (“Guido Alpa, Maestro and Lawyer: Profile of an Eclectic Jurist Without Borders”). The event was co-organised by Sapienza University of Rome, the Consiglio Nazionale Forense (CNF), the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), the Associazione Civilisti Italiani, the Master in European Private Law at Sapienza University (MDPE), the Associazione Italiana di Diritto Comparato (AIDC), and the Società Italiana degli Studiosi del Diritto Civile (SISDIC – Regione Lazio).

The conference brought together distinguished professors, jurists, and scholars from across Italy and beyond to celebrate Professor Alpa’s profound contributions to legal scholarship, public service, and the development of private law. Through institutional greetings and roundtable discussions, participants reflected on his intellectual generosity, visionary leadership, and lifelong dedication to the advancement of legal culture.

UNIDROIT President Professor Maria Chiara Malaguti was among the institutional speakers delivering tributes at the opening of the event. Deputy Secretary-General Professor Anna Veneziano and Principal Legal Officer Professor Meiling Huang participated in the first roundtable session, offering personal reflections and recalling Professor Alpa’s key role in fostering international dialogue in the field of private law.

UNIDROIT also took the opportunity to acknowledge Professor Alpa’s longstanding engagement with the Institute, notably his valued contributions as a member of the Working Group on International Investment Contracts. A steadfast supporter of comparative legal scholarship, Professor Alpa actively promoted collaboration between Italian academia and UNIDROIT, and mentored generations of scholars devoted to the study of transnational private law. His vision, intellectual depth, and enduring commitment have left a lasting legacy at UNIDROIT and within the broader international legal community.
