UNIDROIT Secretary-General Participates in the Signing Ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation in Hong Kong

On 30 May 2025, Professor Ignacio Tirado, Secretary-General of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), participated in the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) in Hong Kong—a global intergovernmental legal organisation dedicated to the resolution of international disputes through mediation.

Following the ceremony, Professor Tirado participated in the Global Forum on International Mediation, speaking during the session on International Investment and International Commercial Dispute Mediation, in which he extended his congratulations on the formal establishment of IOMed, highlighted the relevance and potential application of UNIDROIT’s legal instruments—such as those developed under the International Investment Contracts project—in supporting effective mediation.

During the event, Professor Tirado was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and met with the Director-General of the IOMed Preparatory Office, reaffirming UNIDROIT’s strong commitment to international cooperation in legal harmonization and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Headquartered in Hong Kong, IOMed is established to provide mediation services—based on the consent of the parties—in disputes between states, between states and foreign investors, and in international commercial contexts. Its declared objective is to fill an institutional gap in international mediation and to serve as a rule-of-law-based public good in support of global governance.

UNIDROIT looks forward to continued collaboration in advancing the harmonisation of private law to support international mediation and dispute resolution.
